Welcome
8th International Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
CSCL2009: CSCL Practices
CSCL 2009 is the eighth international CSCL conference and will be held in Rhodes, Greece on June 8-13, 2009. The conference is co-organised by the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) and the University of the Aegean.
The conference focuses on issues related to formal and informal learning through collaboration, promoting productive collaborative interactions with the help of the computer and every kind of communications technologies.
It includes a lively mix of keynotes, submitted paper sessions, submitted and invited symposia, workshops, panels, educational showcases, posters sessions, demos and exhibitions, covering timely and important issues of interest to the community and reporting recent research findings. In addition, CSCL 2009 calls for proposals from the world of Education as well as the world of professional training in Companies.
Conference participants can be honoured by awards:
- Senior Best Paper Award
- Student Best Paper Award
- Technology Design Award
CSCL conference is a major international event that gathers together people involved in all aspects of the field of technology-based collaborative learning, including research, education, training and technology. Accordingly, CSCL 2009 invites participation from experienced as well as early career researchers, designers, educators, industrial trainers from various disciplines including education, cognitive, social and educational psychology, didactics, subject matter specialities, computer science, linguistics and semiotics, speech communication, anthropology, sociology, design, etc.
Conference Theme
The conference theme 'CSCL Practices' emphasises practices relating to technology based collaborative learning in three major areas:
- Learning in typical educational institutional structures: preschool and primary education, secondary education, higher and adults' education, without forgetting special education.
- Learning in workplaces structures: e.g. professional training in companies.
- Learning in every day life: informal learning in everyday practices, involving the uses of typical or wireless technological devices, in the every day lives of students or adults, but also during specific activities, whether scientific (e.g. in museums) or not.
The CSCL community is not only concerned with studying and designing effective technological CSCL tools, but also with identifying the actual educational and professional practices that are associated with their appropriate usages. In order to study practices in a reflective way, powerful theories and analytical approaches are required. The deep initial aim is to understand how learning emerges, on an individual level, on a group cognition level, but also at a social level.
Furthermore, the core aim is to examine how to support learning along different dimensions, with subtle combinations of human and technological scaffolding: how to support individual cognition, how to support group cognition, how to support social cognition, and moreover how to support regulation and management of those processes (e.g. on a social level, how the school units can be supported during the process of adopting innovative practices?). For these reasons, the CSCL community tries to design and deliver appropriate technological tools that could be well integrated into educational practices and adopted by the pupils as well as designing associated learning activities (regular or informal ones), whilst exploring efficient ways to influence appropriately the corresponding contexts, on different scales.
Thus, this specific conference calls for better exchanges and mutual influences, between CSCL researchers and the actors in the educational world (that influence learning in educational structures), as well as the actors of technology-related industries (that influence directly or indirectly learning in our every day life).
