Palmer House Hilton Hotel

One of Chicago's many historical buildings, the Palmer House was originally built in 1871 as a gift from Potter Palmer to his wife, only to burn down in the Great Chicago Fire thirteen days after its grand opening. Palmer hired Chicago School architect John M. Van Osdel and set to rebuilding immediately, creating the new structure out of brick and iron, which on opening was touted as "The World's Only Fire Proof Hotel." Since then, the building has been added to several times, but remained open during such renovations, earning it the title of the longest continually-operating hotel in North America.
