T4: Fle3-software: Bringing Knowledge Building and Collaborative Design to the Classroom
Full day tutorial at CSCL2003, Sunday June 15, 2003
Teemu Leinonen and Giedre Kligyte, University of Arts and Design Helsinki, Finland
Pirita Seitamaa-Hakkarainen, University of Joensuu, Finland
Computer lab, Sunday June 15th, 09:00-14:00 (9am-2pm, includes one hour lunch break)
Overview
Fle3 is a web-based learning environment. To be more specific Fle3 is server
software for computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and design.
Fle3 is Open Source and Free Software released under the GNU General Public
License (GPL). The license is protecting users (teachers, researchers,
designers, software developers) freedom to use, modify and distribute Fle3.
Fle3 is designed to support learner and group centered work that
concentrates on creating and developing expressions of knowledge (i.e.
knowledge artefacts). Fle3 contains three learning tools and several
administration tools. Fle3 is easy to localize to different languages (you
have to translate only one file). Currently users may use Fle3 in Finnish,
English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Norwegian,
Danish, Dutch, Italian, Lithuanian, Estonian or German languages.
Intended Audience
The tutorial is intended for the researchers and practitioners in CSCL that
are interested in using open source web-based technology for applying
knowledge building or collaborative design pedagogy in practice. The optimal number of participants is 9 (minimum 6, maximum 12)
Theme and Goals
The theme of the tutorial is collaborative learning and design with Fle3
software. The objective of the tutorial is to give the participants tools
and methods that will help them to apply Fle3 software in classroom - both
in practical and research levels.
The tutorial will cover the following topics:
- Pedagogical and usability foundations of Fle3 software
- A technical introduction of Fle3 software for non-technical persons (by a non-technical person)
- Using Fle3
- Case Studies
- Hands-on knowledge building and jamming within the tutorial group
- Getting involved in the Fle3 development
Activities
The tutorial will consist of presentation and demo of Fle3 followed with
hands-on activities. The pedagogical ideas underlying the design of Fle3
software will be explained. The tutorial will provide examples of successful
use of Fle3 and offer a small knowledge building or collaborative design
experiment among the tutorial participants.
The tutorial will be focused on hands-on activities and during the session
the participants will learn to install, maintain, manage and use Fle3. The
participants will have an opportunity to set up their own Fle3 installation
in the computers available (or in their own laptops). The tutorial will
explain how researchers could use Fle3 database for importing, exporting
data and using it in external data analyses software (e.g. AtlasTi).
Instructors
Teemu Leinonen is currently doing doctoral dissertation research on design
with collaborative computer tools in real world communities. Part of the
work he is developing several new online learning tools to web and mobile
environments. Since 1998 Mr Leinonen has been leading the UIAH Media Lab's
(University of Art and Design Helsinki) Learning Environments for
Progressive Inquiry research group. The research group has developed an open
source virtual learning environment called Fle3 (Future Learning
Environment). Currently the research group is coordinating Innovative
Technology for Collaborative Learning and Knowledge Building (ITCOLE)
research and development project, funded by The European Commission in the
Information Society Technologies (IST) framework; IST-00-III.2 'School of
Tomorrow'.
Giedre Kligyte is currently working on her doctoral dissertation on
narration and scenario based design in online environments. Since 2001 she
has been working in the UIAH Media Lab's (University of Art and Design
Helsinki) Learning Environments for Progressive Inquiry research group as a
designer and researcher. Ms. Kligyte has been responsible for the user
interface design of Fle3 learning environment. She has been also involved in
Innovative Technology for Collaborative Learning and Knowledge Building
(ITCOLE) research and development project, funded by The European Commission
in the Information Society Technologies (IST) framework; IST-00-III.2
'School of Tomorrow' as designer and researcher.
Pirita Seitamaa-Hakkarainen is a professor of Craft Science of
Savonlinna Department of Teacher Education, University of Joensuu. Last year
she was a visiting scholar (funded by Academy of Finland) at the Institute
for Knowledge Innovation and Technology, Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education, University of Toronto. She has studied design processes and
design thinking and conducted several empirical research projects in the
area of virtual design. She actively participated in development of a
computer supported collaborative learning and designing environment called
the Future Learning Environment (FLE) that is designed to facilitate
knowledge building and collaborative design. The Fle3 project has been
developed in close collaboration between Department of Psychology University
of Helsinki and Media Laboratory UIAH.
