ICLS 2016 invites short papers that focus on improving learning practices through the application of the learning sciences. The conference theme, "Transforming Learning, Empowering Learners", foregrounds deep learning in effective learning environments, digital epistemologies and learning in the new media age, teacher knowledge and professional development, and reflexive relations between practice and methods.
The learning sciences bring together research methods from multiple disciplines to characterize learning in real world settings. We encourage K-12 educators to share their practical experiences with the learning sciences. These experiences can include teaching practices from formal learning settings like a class lecture. They can also include informal learning activities like designing collaborative spaces for interactive museum exhibits or after-school activities. We hope that sharing such experiences will promote discussions between delegates as they consider how educators, professionals, academics and researchers can collaborate with each other to further the contributions of the learning sciences in practice.
Short papers are limited to 4 pages and must follow the formatting instructions provided in a template. All submissions will be subjected to peer review by an international program committee specially set up for the Practitioners' Track. The program committee reserves the right to determine whether a submitted paper is accepted for presentation and publication in the proceedings. Nominations for the Best Practitioner Paper award will be based on reviewers' recommendations.
Short papers are for work that contributes to the improvement of practice but is still in progress, of a smaller scale, or can be reported briefly. Submissions should state: (a) the major issue(s) addressed, (b) potential significance of the work, (c) the theoretical and methodological approach(es) pursued, (d) how the work furthers improvement of practice and contributes to the learning sciences, and (e) relevant scholarly references. Moreover, short papers should clearly relate to the conference theme. Short papers must not exceed 4 pages in length including images, tables and references. Submissions must be prepared for blind review. Please refer to http://www.journals.elsevier.com/social-science-and-medicine/policies/double-blind-peer-review-guidelines/ for guidelines on how to prepare a blinded manuscript.
Presentations for the Practitioners' Track will use the following interactive presentation format:
In an interactive session, the presenters will first give a brief presentation of their topic with slides before moving to their distributed stations. Delegates will move between the stations for the rest of the session. During this time, presenters may answer questions, pose questions for discussion, or demonstrate supplementary materials for people to see, touch, and interact with audience at their station.
