The City. Utrecht, the Netherlands' most central large city, is incomparable with any other place. You can walk straight from the train to the shops, have a beer or a delicious meal right beside the old canal, and enjoy a history spanning almost 2000 years.
Utrecht has an interesting past, beginning with a Roman castle established in 47 AD as part of reinforcements along the Rhine. At the end of the 7th century, the English missionary Willibrord settled in Utrecht. Utrecht subsequently acquired great ecclesiastical power and developed into an international trade centre. The canals and wharves date from this golden period.
The University and the Campus. Located in the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht University is firmly founded on tradition. Utrecht University, which celebrated its 370th anniversary in 2006, has developed into one of Europe's largest and most prominent institutes of research and education. Utrecht University offers the broadest spectrum of disciplines available in the Netherlands, innovative research and liaises with universities and research centres all over the world.
Prompted by its rapid growth in recent decades, the University has moved many of its departments from the city centre to the University’s Uithof campus. The campus has been enriched by some much-discussed buildings designed by prominent Dutch architects, which has led to its reputation as a showcase for modern architecture. As a matter of fact, the main venue, The Educatorium was designed by Rem Koolhaas, a world renowned Dutch architect. This campus will host the conference. It has a large number of both small and large lecture facilities to allow plenary sessions, paper sessions, workshops and demonstrations. Also, the main lecture centre has accommodations for exhibitors.
